Birth in the United States: If you were born on U.S. soil, you are generally a U.S. citizen by birthright. This is often referred to as “birthright citizenship.”
Citizenship through Parents: If one or both of your parents are U.S. citizens and meet certain residency requirements, you may acquire U.S. citizenship at birth.
Green Card Holders (Lawful Permanent Residents): Most people become U.S. citizens after first obtaining a green card, which gives them lawful permanent resident status. Green card holders can apply for U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process after meeting specific residency and other eligibility requirements.
The typical requirements for naturalization (the process of becoming a U.S. citizen as a green card holder) include:
Permanent Residency: You must have been a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) for a certain period, usually five years (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen).
Physical Presence: You must have been physically present in the United States for at least half of the required residency period.
Continuous Residence: You must have maintained continuous residence in the United States during the required residency period.
Good Moral Character: You should have demonstrated good moral character during the required period.
Knowledge of English and U.S. Government: You must pass an English language and civics test.
Attachment to the U.S. Constitution: You must demonstrate an understanding and attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution.
Oath of Allegiance: You must take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
Keep in mind that the specific eligibility requirements and the application process can change, so it’s important to check the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website or consult with an immigration attorney for the most up-to-date information and guidance on how to become a U.S. citizen.
