Green Card Renewal

If you are a permanent resident of the United States and your green card is expiring or has expired, you will need to go through the process of green card renewal to maintain your lawful permanent resident status. Here are the steps to renew your green card:

  1. File Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card: This is the application form for green card renewal. You can file it online or submit a paper application. The form can be found on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website.

  2. Gather Supporting Documents: Along with Form I-90, you will need to provide supporting documentation. This typically includes a copy of your expiring or expired green card, a copy of your current government-issued photo identification, and any other requested documents. Make sure to follow the instructions on the form carefully.

  3. Pay the Filing Fee: There is a filing fee associated with Form I-90. The fee amount may vary, so check the USCIS website for the most up-to-date fee information. Fee waivers are available in certain circumstances, so you should also review the USCIS fee waiver guidelines.

  4. Biometrics Appointment: After you submit your application, you may be required to attend a biometrics appointment. During this appointment, your fingerprints and photographs will be taken to conduct background checks.

  5. Attend an Interview (if necessary): In some cases, USCIS may require an interview as part of the renewal process. You will be notified if an interview is required. Be prepared to answer questions about your immigration history and status.

  6. Receive the New Green Card: If your green card renewal is approved, you will receive your new green card in the mail. Green cards are typically valid for 10 years, but the actual validity period may vary based on your individual circumstances.
